Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge. When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to the Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. All the animals who have been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special, someone who was left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; his eager body begins to quiver. Suddenly, he breaks from the group, flying over the green grass, faster and faster. You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into those trusting eyes, so long gone from life, but never absent from your heart. Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together — Author Unknown

SMURF
Almost 13 years ago I was walking across the show floor at the Super Pet Expo and felt like someone was staring at me. I looked over at a rescue booth and saw the biggest pair of gorgeous brown eyes following me from inside of his cage. I managed to walk by that booth several more times that day. And each time those eyes pulled me a little closer. Even though I already had three dogs at home and didn’t “need” another one, I agreed to foster Smurf to see if he was a good fit before I adopted him. Two weeks later the rescue called to finalize the adoption, and I’d forgotten I hadn’t already done that! He fit right in, and from the start he was always my “Ride or Die” pup. Eight months later I started dating David , and they were buddies right from the start. Last month he was diagnosed with stage 4 lymphoma - it started in his spleen, which is why we didn’t catch it until it was too late. He also had kidney disease, so chemo wouldn’t have worked since the drugs need to be flushed out of the body by healthy kidneys. Even though he was surely in pain, he never complained. I would lay with him, swimming in those big brown eyes, and promised him that I would free him from his broken body when the time was right. We made a final vet appointment for this Saturday, but he decided to go on his own. Last night we kissed my boy and held him close as he crossed over. Fly free my sweet Smurf Monster...I will love you always, and never stop missing you! Look for Bear, and Sheba, and Sasha at the Bridge - they’ll show you the way... - Beth Cotell

ARTURO
2008 - 2021
On a fittingly gray day, with dignity and grace, surrounded by his parents and in the comfort of the big bed, Arturo took his last breath. He was 13 years old and had endured several chronic illnesses, along with a recent critical care hospital stay. A small dog with a large personality and even larger list of aliases: Señor Arturo Ratita; El Señor; Captain Banjo Esq. III; Boo Boo Bear; and the eponymous, Smarty Artie Farty Party. Born in rural North Carolina, Arturo’s early years were shaped by living in a hoarding situation. It was there, surrounded by cats, that he picked up his impeccable grooming habits and cat-like insouciance. Every morning, after meals, and before bed, Arturo dutifully licked his paws and washed his face. He extended this ritual of grooming and love to only one other — his dad. Arturo did not give kisses freely and reserved them exclusively to shower his dad with non-stop morning and night face kisses. A champion Blanket Fighter in his early years, Arturo was renowned for his epic blanket battles that his long-time fans fondly remember. He retired having never lost a fight and funneled his athleticism full-time into fetch. An avid collector, Arturo enjoyed procuring new acquisitions of fetch toys in all shapes, sizes, textures, and pedigree. His parents encouraged this passion, and most recently delighted Arturo with a stuffed bear from their Colorado travels. Though he had two overflowing toy boxes, Arturo remained smitten most by Dog, followed by Fox and Donut. He never met a balloon or fruit he liked. A self-deputized crowd controller, Arturo was known to stand at the periphery of dogs at play and bark at them to stop. He mostly went ignored, especially by his playfully crazy cousins Sam and Frank, but that didn’t deter him from asserting his power. On football Sundays you could find him decked out in a Kansas City Chiefs jersey, cheering along with his dad. At most any other time, you could find him wherever in the house his mom was. She was decidedly the pack leader. Though he’d never admit it, Arturo secretly loved the silly songs she’d sing to him daily in his honor. A master manipulator, Arturo honed his skills to hustle treats and intimidate dog walkers who woke him from napping. He was equal parts handsome and cunning, and his megawatt pirate smile melted hearts worldwide. Arturo will be remembered as a passionate chicken lover (in food and friend form alike), power napper, treat connoisseur, photogenic model, and for doing everything on his terms and in his time. He defied odds — surprising his emergency, cardiology, and primary veterinary care team — and survived a critical care stay to grant us three more weeks with him and his lovable, feisty, independent, smart, mellow, curious, sweet, and at the end, incredibly snuggly presence. He is survived by his parents, Erica and Brian; his aunt and uncle, Tia Donellen and Tio Tom; cousins Alex, Dylan, Sam, and Frank; and his spirit human, Grandpaw Jack. - Brian and Erica
